It’s no easy feat keeping your New Year’s health and fitness goals going strong. It’s not uncommon to go all-in during the first few weeks and then slowly find yourself tapering off from that full-blown enthusiasm. If that’s currently you hope is not all lost in reaching your goals. Use these 8 easy tips to stay on top of your goals in the New Year and keep your fitness motivation going.
Visualizing that you’re already where you want to be in your goals is a great mental tool that many elite athletes use to reach success. You can do the same thing. Picture yourself doing a pull-up, running a marathon, 100 burpees, or whatever your current goal is. When you set your sight on doing those things, you’re getting your mindset ready for success.
The only thing that you will gain with a short-term, extreme goal is disappointment. Aiming for lofty goals in a rapid amount of time is a recipe for disaster. Rushing the process of weight loss with extreme dieting or running a marathon when you’ve never even run a 5k can cause both short and long-term health problems including gaining back the weight and injury to your muscles and joints.
Besides, the feeling of accomplishment is so much greater when you can do something that you have been dreaming about for a long time- that’s what keeps your fitness motivation going and helps you to keep putting in hard work. Slow and steady wins the race!
Even if you’re aiming for a specific number on the scale or for that perfect form pistol squat reward yourself along the way. Remember where you started and even if you haven’t YET reached that winning number you’re already that much closer to your goal.
Whether it’s your kids or your best friend watching you achieve your goals remember that they ARE watching. You may not realize it but, while you are off crushing your goals, those around you are also benefiting from your actions. Your kids are learning from your healthy, determined, go-get-em lifestyle and your best friend may even just join you during your next gym session. YOU are the fitness inspiration!
While aiming for those achievable goals, keep yourself on track by creating (ahead of time) a doable routine; scheduling time for your workouts with your trainer, planning out your weekly menu, and spending a few minutes before the start of the week organizing your goals is a sure fire way to set yourself up for success. You’ll go into the new week with a clear and organized schedule, less stress, less likely of missing a workout, and more time to focus on the other important things like family and a good night’s sleep!
